Carved Stone Bears

Patrick Imai

I am a self-taught sculptor who has carved for more than 40 years. I also dabbled in other art forms: sketching, painting and stained glass, but always return to carving. I use to carve in wood, whittling tiny animals and figures with a pocket knife or with palm chisels, then in the late 90’s, I switched to stone carving. I addition to soapstone I carve alabaster, serpentine, limestone, selenite and marble. I love the colours and texture of the polished stone.

Most of my carvings are bears. I try to capture movement and evoke human emotions in my carvings.

I am also a member of Arteast, Arts Ottawa East, the Kanata Civic Art Gallery and the National Capital Network of Sculptors.
